From the start we knew our campaign for mayor of Manchester would be an uphill battle, but also that it was one worth fighting.
We were massively outspent by all three of our opponents in this four-person race — including by more than $100,000 each by the two winning candidates. In our third place showing, however, we not only won Ward 2 decisively and came within one vote of winning Ward 3, but we had the lowest cost-per-vote ratio in the race. This is a testament to our people-powered campaign.
While the results were not what we were hoping for, I congratulate Jay Ruais and Kevin Cavanaugh on their wins last night. I also thank Jay, Kevin, and June Trisiciani for running positive campaigns that spoke to the best of Manchester and its potential.
So while I’m disappointed in the outcome, disappointment is far from the only emotion I’m feeling today.
I’m feeling proud — of the campaign that we ran, and the way that we ran it. Ours was a true grassroots effort that shared not just a vision to make Manchester one of America’s great mid-sized cities, but also provided substantive ideas and plans for how to achieve that vision. And a lot of people took notice.
I’m feeling humbled — that so many of you invested so much in this campaign. I’ve said from the beginning that this campaign wasn’t about me, it was about all of us. So to those who stood up to say #WeWill, thank you. Your support, encouragement, volunteer hours, financial contributions, endorsements, and even cookie deliveries have shown me just how fortunate I am — and how fortunate we are to live in this community together.
And most of all, I’m feeling inspired. The battle might have been lost, but the fight for a Stronger Manchester for Everyone continues.
